Cluster Score

Cluster scores are similar to rubric scored items, but involve more than one item being clustered together under one rubric score. For example, two or more constructed responses may be combined for a wholistic score.

An example of a group of wholistically scored items appears on NYS ELA at grades 4, 6, and 8. At these grade levels, the extended response items from Listening/Writing and Reading/Writing are viewed together to determine a wholistic Writing Mechanics score for students.

Another exmample in ELA appears at grades 3, 5, and 7 in the Reading/Writing portion of the assessment. Students are asked to read two passages and complete three short responses and one extended response. When scoring, teachers score these four responses as a whole assigning one rubric score for the cluster of items in this section.
